Do Your Children Play?

Do Your Children Still Play?

Do your children play after school or do they come home and sit on the couch and watch TV or are play on their electronic devices?  I know my children need a little bit of downtime when they get home from school.  But what they really want when they get home is a snack and then to go outside to play!

How Do Your Children Play?

My son gets home 20 minutes before my daughter.  He has his snack and watches a little bit of TV while he waits for her to get home.  Once she arrives she has a snack and then they make a plan for what they want to play first.

Do Your Kids Play?Earlier this week it was all about forts!  We had some rainy weather so I didn’t mind that the kids built forts in the living room.  But it had to be cleaned up each night because they used just about every blanket and pillow they could find!

The past two days my son has been bike riding with a ramp going out of the back door of our garage.  So as soon as my daughter gets home he wants to ride bikes with her.

Do You Have A Full Size Tent In Your Playroom?

If your kids asked you if they could set up a full size camping tent in the house would you let them?  We are fortunate enough that the entire downstairs of our raised ranch is a designated playroom for the kids.  This pretty much means anything goes.

My son wanted to set up the camping tent in the playroom one Sunday evening while I was working out.  I figured why not?!  They are only young once and it’s only in the basement.  So as you can imagine there’s a lot of set up and tear down that takes place when the kids are building forts and setting up tents.  It’s much easier for me when their play place is somewhere outside of course.

I Never Discourage Play Time

I always love to hear the sounds of my kids playing on the trampoline, riding their scooters, or rediscovering the fun a wagon can provide while I am inside working.  I always say that if their bare feet are dirty and they have grass stains on their knees then it’s a good day to be a kid.

For the most part my kids don’t spend a lot of time on electronic devices.  I don’t have a timer set up on them yet, but I do watch how much time they are on them and sometimes I will kick them off the couch and send them outside to play.  But most of the time they do that on their own.

From the time they were little we were always outside.  When the temperature hit 40 degrees they would kick off their socks and shoes and throw them off the deck so they could be barefoot.  When it was 45 degrees they would ask me where their shorts and tank tops were because they didn’t want to wear winter clothes anymore!

Do Your Kids Still Play?

When it rained, we would jump in puddles or play with umbrellas or bubbles.  When it snowed, we were always outside during the blizzards until late at night sled riding and building forts.  In the summer their fingers and toes would look like prunes from being in the pool.

We always want to have a good time.  In fact, it’s becoming a challenge for me to get my son to stop playing to get his homework done.  He just wants to stay a kid at heart and not have to dig into the amount of schoolwork a middle school student is now required to maintain.

Do your kids still play?  What do you do for fun as a family?  I’d love to hear how you disconnect and try to live in the moment with your family.

St. Ives Mixing Bar

St. Ives Mixing Bar In NYC

When I went to New York City for the #BlogHer18 conference I met my friend Claudia from Trendy Latina at our hotel. We were going to attend a press event and she invited me to join her at the St. Ives Mixing Bar to check out their products.

From the minute I walked in and saw the green wall full of lush greens and fresh fruits and vegetables, I knew I would love it there.

What Is St. Ives Mixing Bar?

St. Ives Mixing Bar

You can purchase products that are already mixed and packaged or you can design your own facial and body products. You can make a face scrub, face moisturizer, or body lotion.

To customize your products, you take a menu from the mixing bar and bring it over to the sink stations. From there you can smell, feel, and even sample some of the products on your own skin.  This way you can decide which ingredients you like most, the fragrance you want, and how deep of an exfoliant you need.

First you decide on how deep of an exfoliant you want for your scrub:

  • Deep
  • Moderate
  • Gentle

Then you select an exfoliant:

  • Walnut shell powder
  • Volcanic sand
  • Apricot stone

Last, you choose the ingredient your skin will love:

  • Cucumber kale
  • Avocado honey
  • Watermelon agave
  • Pineapple mango
  • Aloe rose water
  • Pink grapefruit yuzu
  • Green apple kiwi
  • Guava tangerine

When you bring your recipe card up to the mixing bar, they will mix all the ingredients together right in front of you so you can watch the process.  Then they blend it all together in a NinjaChef blender and place them into your own custom labeled container.

Why Visit St. Ives Mixing Bar?

Why not??  This place was so much fun!  The prices for each customized creation was also very affordable.  For just $12 I have my own all natural, personally customized exfoliant facial scrub and the contents were still warm when they handed me my products!  Talk about freshly made!

I also loved the other activities you could do within the store while waiting for your recipe to be made.  They have a fun photo booth where you can share your photos online and tag St. Ives @sttivesskin and #sttivesmixingbar.  And you can also visit their vending machine to receive a free sample product after completing a short questionnaire.

I definitely plan to come back.  I told my mom this would be a fun thing to do next time we take a trip down to New York City!  It’s very affordable, the products are something we use daily anyway and it would be a fun activity to do together!

New School Year – New Changes For Me!

As the kids were getting ready for the new school year, I had to buy school supplies.  When I was out shopping for new notebooks, pencils, binders, sheet protectors, and folders I had this feeling that I had to start something new.  I wanted a new notebook and folder to start from the beginning in.

What Was My New Change?

I had been sitting on a redesign for my own blog for a long time.  I knew I was going to switch servers and host my site with Bluehost. (This is my affiliate link, should you wish to help support me).  I knew my site needed to be Google Chrome compliant and I should enable SSL to my site will return higher on the Google search results.  But, I still had my site hosted on goDaddy.  So I decided that since the kids were starting a new school year, it was time for me to begin a fresh start.I had been working with a close friend of mine getting advice on what I could do to make my blog better.  Ya see, when you are designing something for someone else, it feels so much easier than when you have to do your own.  I think that is because we are our own worst critic.  I was given a few pointers and I knew what I had to do.  I spent the Friday night of Labor Day weekend designing.  I was having such a good time.  My daughter was working on a school project in her office and I was in there on the designing computer while we were jamming to good music.

I needed to design this new site because my message was not clear.  My blog was looking like my brain had been feeling for the past few months!   There was no organization, nothing that told my readers who I was, what I was passionate about, and what I enjoy doing.  I needed to have my favorite colors and the look needed to be clean.  So I am happy to say I did it!  And yes, I was working on a weekend; but I was playing!  That’s fun for me.  And I was taking the advice that my friend had given me when we met a week ago.

What Am I Doing To Change?

  • I am very deliberate with my intentions each day.
  • I am using time blocking to get specific tasks done within chunks of time so I have appropriate focus.
    • Batch writing is a great example of how this is working well for me.  I can create several blog posts at once and schedule it so that I don’t lose the flow from writing.
  • I am taking time to learn something new each day
  • I am intentionally making sure I am using a pinnable graphic in my blog to grow my traffic with Pinterest.

What’s Next?

Now it’s time to get back to what I loved, writing for my blog.  Two years ago, I used to be able to write a new blog post every day.  When I felt overwhelmed that my blog wasn’t serving me, I stopped writing.  Now that I have a new strategy in place to have a successful day, I feel like it is much easier for me to write.  With this new structure to my day, my brain is also feeling more clear.

And one more piece of good news to report.  I am being more consistent with my training.  In addition to more frequent runs, I am doing my cross training again with weight lifting and leg exercises.  Taking care of me in addition to everything else I love.
