Wife Mother Runner’s Favorite Safety Running Gear
I am sharing my favorite safety running gear with you because as we are now officially in the winter season, the days are still shorter. If you can’t get your run done during the daylight hours, you do need to be safe and use the right gear to enhance your visibility.
With the new year approaching you may want to start with a resolution to get active, or be more active. Running is a great activity to add to your fitness routine. But remember, you have to ease into it the right way. I love to run. I try to run 3 times a week minimum depending on where I am in a training cycle. Right now I am training for the runDisney Dopey Challenge which will begin on January 10, 2019 in Walt Disney World.
Running Gear To Provide Safety Protection
It is important when you are running to be seen, even in the daytime. I can tell you that there have been many times that I had to jump up on a curb or off the road because a distracted driver did not see me.
I wear bright colors when I run; but I also make sure that if I know I will be out when it begins to get dark that I have the appropriate safety gear on. My favorite items and also those that I would like to add to my running gear as well. (These links contain my affiliate links).
Reflective Gear
Reflective Vest – I like the brand RUSEEN. These vests are light weight and don’t bother me when I am running. They also have more reflective coverage across your body so the light from headlights are sure to capture your movement. THe mater
Lights
A headlamp – I have this clip on headlamp because it isn’t too heavy and doesn’t have to strap onto my skull. I found that to be combersome when running and it wasn’t comfortable. I prefer this headlamp for another point where drivers can see me. But the next item below will really help me to see the road in front of me.
Knuckle Lights – Knuckle lights are great because you can point out potholes and rocks with the flick of a wrist. When a car is coming in your direction you can wave your lights toward them to get their attention. They can also be set to a flashing option. They are also portable enough to keep in your pocket before it gets dark or once the sun comes up.
Safety Accessories
Aftershokz Headphones – it’s very important to be able to hear what is going on around you. Especially if you are running on the road. That’s why Aftershokz are the perfect bluetooth headphones for runners. They use bone conduction from your cheekbones to deliver the sound via mini vibrations to your inner ear. I love my Aftershokz headphones!
Knife ring – I heard on the Another Mother Runner podcast #337: Self-DEFENSE ADVICE FROM 2X ASSAULT SURVIVOR KELLY HERRON about an awesome safety ring that you can wear while runnning and don’t have to fumble around to activate or find if you were approached by an attacker.
What Do You Use For Safety Running Gear?
Do you have a favorite piece of running gear that you use when you run that isn’t listed here? I’d love to hear about it so we can share more with my readers. Please leave a comment with what you use!
So many great gifts for the runner! Love them all!
Thanks Claudia!
