My Top 5 Favorite Running Podcasts

Do you like to listen to music or a podcast when running? I enjoy listening to podcasts and want to share with you my top 5 favorite running podcasts. I love to learn while running. This is usually the case when I am doing my longer runs. If I am working on speed, music is preferred. Here are the podcasts I recommend for you to check out right away!

My Top 5 Favorite Running Podcasts

1. Another Mother Runner

As a brand ambassador for Another Mother Runner, their podcast is top of my list for favorite running podcasts. I have been listening to them since the beginning of my running journey. Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bohen Shea are the hosts of the AMR podcast, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting them in person several times!

I love their real talk and their multiple guest co hosts. My favorite episodes are when Sarah and Molly get to talking about everyday things. They can sometimes get going and have me laughing out loud while running. But on an running note, they really do have great content for women runners, as well as mother runners. They’ve expanded over the years and have a lot more episodes to share. Now you can find AMR Trains podcast and AMR Answers as part of their series.

As I mentioned, I am a #BAMRBASSADOR so I have shared, and I will be sharing more from them over the year, so be sure to look for my content from them!

2. RunOhana

My favorite runDisney podcast is The runOhana Podcast with my friends Donna, Brittany, Ryan and Kenny. It’s so good to hear their voices! I miss my runDisney friends! I love their stories of everyday life and running, along with their fun ideas for runDisney races!

My favorite episode so far is their Reimagining RunDisney’s Star Wars Race Weekend episode. Ryan, Donna, and Brittany came up with some creative ideas for runDisney race suggestions. I won’t spoil who the winner of the three options was, so you’ll have to check out their March 26th episode for that!

3. Runner’s Block

My two favorite gomers are launching a new podcast. They started The Runner’s Block podcast. Steven and Anthony are the two gomers who have started their podcast over 10 years ago when they decided they wanted to train for a half marathon.

I highly recommend starting with the Runners Block podcast and getting current with their new podcast, and then go into the archives of the Two Gomers podcast from 10 years back and listen to their story from the beginning. I promise you, you will not be disappointed! It’s lighthearted (most of the time), funny, inspirational and you do learn things about running along the way!

I don’t want to spoil too much of their history; but they do accomplish many goals they set out to do from the half marathon that started it all, to a full marathon and even a triathlon. Their adventures as two regular guys challenging themselves to live healthier is really fun to binge!

A fellow co-worker from my Honeywell days started his own podcast called Inspire Virtual Runs. When I saw that Richard started a Facebook group and had a podcast about running , I sent him a message right away. I love when friends of mine are excited about running. It re-sparks my love for running again. I get excited to share what, and who I know in the running community, and also to learn from them what they are sharing.

I’ve had the pleasure of being a guest on Richard’s podcast twice! I’ve always wanted to have a podcast; but it’s not the right time for me. So in the meantime, if I can be a guest on a show, I’d love it! You can check out my interview with Richard in episode 8. My husband and I also talked with him about heart health in episode 20. You can also join his Facebook group to share and learn more about running.

5. Will Run For…

Will Run For… is another podcast from my runDisney friends. It’s newer in my lineup of podcasts so I am glad to know that I have some episodes to binge listen to. This podcast is hosted by Tom and Diana, and Erin and Michael.

I came across their show via Facebook when they announced a virtual race they are hosting a Virtually Live Race on April 10. This race will be a “choose your own adventure” where you pick the distance, the location and gather your favorite running crew. Runners and Walkers of any ability are welcome to join. Any distance from 1 mile to 100 miles counts and what they hope will make this special is that everyone will run “virtually together” sharing their adventures with each other via social media.

If you are interested, sign up by April 3rd so you can receive your swag before the race. Also check out more helpful running tips within their Facebook group as well!

I Am A 2019 BAMRbassador!

I received the news last week that I was selected out of the 300 applicants to become a BAMRbassador! I had to keep it a secet until today. Do you know how hard that was for me? I was so excited when I saw the email at 2 a.m. (I had to pee). What does that mean? It means I am going to be helping my favorite mother runners, Sarah and Dimity from Another Mother Runner!

Dimity was supporting Sarah and other Mother Runners at the Philadelphia Marathon in 2014. She was on a bike to get them on several areas of the race course. I was lucky enough to spot her not far from where Sarah was on the way back from the out and back and was in her pain cave at that point. So we got a quick selfie and off I went.

What is A BAMRbassador?

I am a “Bad Ass Mother Runner” Ambassador. I’m sure you must have seen me wearing my Bad Ass Mother Runner hoodie around town. Sometimes when I was at cub scounts or softball practice I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to have the words Bad Ass on my sweatshirt. I practically live in that or my North Branford Softball hoodie.

Back to the question. As a BAMRbassador I will:

Support Another Mother Runner at an AMR booth at race expos
Share brands of AMR to my readers
Introduce other women runners to the power and assets of the AMR Tribe (as Sarah explained it on the announcement today).

Check out the announcement and see if there are other BAMRbassadors you may know! I’d love to unite all of us in my own Facebook group. I can’t wait to hear what is in store for me this year! I’d really love to go to one of their retreats. In fact, as I start planning my vision board for 2019 I am going to put that on there! Cape Cod is right in my neck of the woods. Maybe I can even rent a Chrysler Pacifica to drive it there and perhaps pick up anyone who may want to fly in to Hartford, Connecticut.

Who Is Another Mother Runner?

If you are a runner and you haven’t heard of Another Mother Runner, then you have come to the right place. Because it is my pleasure to make you more aware of their presence and what they have to offer us Mother Runners.

I found Another Mother Runner through Facebook. I believe a friend of mine had shared a link to their first book (the book links are my affiliate links) and I bought it right away for my kindle. I couldn’t wait to read it while I was on vacation in New Hampshire. Then I read their second book as soon as I could. But for their third book I was so excited because I was going to see them at their book signing in Connecticut! A few of us mother runners, who also run several if not all of the runDisney races, met up for dinner before the book signing. It was a fun night out!

What Is A Bad Ass Mother Runner?

In my opinion, it’s any mother who runs. Moms are superheros to begin with. Whether they delivered the child or adopted. Caring for another human being is an incredible responsibility. The criteria that makes you a badass mother runner is that you get out there and you get it done. Despite everything you have that relies on you; you find that time to separate yourself from being mommy and possibly a wife, and have time to yourself, FOR yourself.

My first Dopey Challenge in 2015. I am completing my 5th consecutive Dopey Challenge this January.

That’s part of the reason why I got hooked on running. I’ll share more of my story over the upcoming weeks; but I do know that running is a gift given to us mothers. If it is your thing, you know it. And you crave it.

So feed that craving with some Another Mother Runner Podcasts while you are running, or working, driving, or if you can escape to your bathroom for a little bit (oh who am I kidding?! Mom’s can’t do that!). But that’s another reason why we run. To listen to whatever we want or not listen to anything at all except your breathing and the sound of your feet hitting the pavement.

I’m Scared!

So I am officially scared. I am worried that I won’t make it to the bridge of the Marine Corp Marathon and will be shipped off the course on a bus. I did a 13 mile training run this past weekend and it was a very difficult run in many way. I chose a difficult path with large hills to simulate the hills we had to go up in the beginning of the race last year. I hadn’t anticipated those hills last year, and when I was climbing the what seemed like a never-ending hill that reminded me of the heartbreak hill, my balloon burst early on in the race. It took a lot out of me.

This year the rules are changing for the marathon. When you reach “the Gauntlet” at mile 17 you have to make it through by 12:33 p.m. or you will be diverted from the Certified course and won’t be recognized as an official finisher. You MUST cross the 14th Street Bridge by 1:36 p.m. This is different from last year where the requirement was to make it to the entrance of the Bridge.

So to start to prepare my mindset for what is ahead of me for the rest of my training and to also be successful with this race, I had to work on some data analysis. I sat down with a map of the course and printed out my splits from last year’s race to see where I was slowing down. I also needed to know where the elevation was increased and compare that to my splits to see if the hills had a significant impact on my speed. Ironically, the hills weren’t areas that I noticed problems.

At the beginning of the race, we sort of detoured from the rest of the crowd and our first mile was 14 minutes. The second mile is the hilliest mile and yes we did slow down there. But my weak areas came when I was mentally challenged. It is recommended by the Marine Corps Marathon, that in order to beat the bridge you need a 14 minute mile. I figured I had done several marathons before and that wouldn’t be a problem. Well, I didn’t figure I would be burnt out before the race even started so I didn’t maintain that pace. There was a bathroom break and I did stop at the medical tent so that does show up in the splits.

I am training much harder this year to make sure that I am including long hills early on in my training runs. As you can see from the elevation map on my last long run I climbed quite a few large hills, much larger than the hill at the MCM.

As you can see from the splits, the climb up the large hill (on a very hot, sunny, humid day) was my slowest mile. Mile 7 is where I stopped off at home to refresh my ice and neck wrap. But my average pace for fhe first 9 miles on such a challenging, hot long run was decent. I’d like to get it a little lower however. Miles 12 and 13 I had just run out of gas. I was very overheated. I was just brutally hot out and I don’t believe I had enough fuel on board with me to get this done effectively.

Yes, I am scared, but I am going to work on my strength and am hoping the weather will break soon and I can get in some long runs at a cooler temperature.

On the bright side I was listening to Another Mother Runner podcast about mental training and also Sarah and Molly were talking about throwing a wish out to the universe to find a quarter. But during my run I did find a shiny penny! So I said out loud that I wanted to find silver coins during the last 2 miles of my run. Guess what was waiting for me in my driveway when I got home! SCORE!

Yoga Lesson – Self Control

Last week when I was in Yoga class the instructor talked about self-control. Once again the topic she was focusing on was aligned with something I was focusing on in my life. Just the week before I was signed up as a Team Beach Body Coach because it was time for me to get control of my life. I had been struggling with weight gain from marathon training for years. It seems that as soon as I started to train for multiple marathons within a year my weight climbed along with my mileage. I am not the first person that this has happened to either. Many people have experienced this problem. But I was sick of it. It was slowing me down, I felt disgusted with myself and I wanted it to stop.

I started the Train Like a Mother Stride Into Summer plan to mix up my running with other exercises and also saw a lot of chatter on Facebook with several friends and acquaintances about achieving success with the 21 day fix. I had to find out more about it. One of my friends reached out to me and told me she was a coach and was very successful in losing over 40 pounds with it; so I decided to join. I joined as a coach in hopes that my experience will also inspire someone else. I also wanted access to all of the tools to make my transformation or commitment a success.

This was just the kick start I needed. In conjunction with the Train Like A Mother plan, which added a workout routine back into my life, I started to combine weight training back into my routine. I replaced one meal with a Shakeology shake and was very conscious about what I was eating and also drinking. I increased my intake of water and decreased my intake of alcohol. I was tired of the lack of self-control and failing at “trying” to lose weight. I wasn’t getting into a habit that was sticking for me. This habit seemed to stick.

As soon as I registered, I had access to many different workout videos to stream online. I used to do videos 15 years ago before I got into running. I wanted to learn how to get a full body workout with weights in a way that would also benefit my running. I didn’t want to do any dance type exercises because I am extremely uncoordinated. I came across Slim in Six and that was my first workout video that I started on Friday, June 3. The next day I discovered Chalean with Chalene Johnson and I was hooked immediately. Her videos included upper and lower body workouts and has three levels to it. The first is the Burn level, the second is the Push level and the third is the Lean level.

I can’t say enough good things about these videos. I don’t like to miss a day without doing one. What I like most about those videos is the fact that I am working out my entire body. I used to just do my arms, chest and back muscles and didn’t work out my legs. I figured all of my running was going to help my leg muscles. But I am seeing now that the exercises that help build my leg muscles will help me feel stronger when I run and will also support those lazy muscles that are being neglected from running alone; which in the past has been a cause of some of my running injuries.

I can’t see a different in my body yet; but I do feel the difference in my mind. And I think that has been the key element for me. I do think I noticed a little more strength when running up hills and I will continue to run the hills, while staying withing my heart rate zone, as I continue my heart rate training for the Marine Corps Marathon. So all in all, I think I may finally be on a road to success and I am proud that I have found something to stick to.

Getting In The Zone – Heart Rate Training

With my approach to a more successful Marine Corp Marathon this fall, I am working on my training plan. I already printed out my Jeff Galloway training plan for completing a marathon and filled in the dates going backwards from race day. However, I also want to incorporate heart rate training into my plan this summer. I was listening to two of my favorite podcasts, Another Mother Runner and Team Shenanigans, and they were both duscussing training plans in a way that I hadn’t really heard it explained before.

Dimity, from Another Mother Runner is training for an ultra with her coach Mary-Katherine “MK” Fleming, so she wanted to do so in a way that will help her be successful and also to avoid injury since she has been prone to injuries with her feet so frequently. The Team Shenanigans podcast had Matt Fitzgerald on the show several times and he was talking about doing an 80/20 plan. Meaning 80% of your runs are done at an easier exertion level, and then spend 20% of your training working on speed, whether that be cadence drills or track work.

For the last two weeks I have been doing the heart-rate training with my running. With heart rate training the rule is to keep you heart rate below 140. If it goes above 140 then you have to walk until it lowers. The purpose for doing this during your training is to establish a solid cardiovascular base. Over time you will become faster but while in the training it is grueling because your pace is significantly slower. Heart-rate training requires a lot of patience. It teaches your body to convert fat instead of glucose for fuel.

So far, despite feeling much slower while running, I am doing pretty well with using a heart-rate monitor and training at around 140 bpm. It’s hard because sometimes you easily jump up to 150; but it also syncs in well with my Jeff Galloway run/walk/run method. When my heart rate is higher, it happens just about the time that my timer goes off for a walk break. So my stats have been averaging around 140-144 bpm while running.

The Train Like A Mother Club is providing Heart-Rate Training Programs as well as a Stride Into Summer Plan so I may take advantage of those two plans to help me have a successful summer of training in preparation for the Marine Corps Marathon.

Girls Night Out with Dimity Was Like Runners Church For Me

Last week during the Hartford marathon pre-events, there was a girls night out meet up at the Hartford club with Dimity McDowell from Another Mother Runner. Before the event I went to the XL Center to pick up my bib and race shirts. On my way there I saw on my new sponsor Ron from Mintz + Hoke. As I was talking to Ron I saw Dimity and Denise leaving the XL Center to go to the Hartford Club. I said hi to them and goodbye to Ron and hurried down to the expo to get my race items. At the expo I met up with Kimberlee D. and her husband. I picked up my race shirts and then we visited some of the booth at the expo. It is definitely a small expo compared to some of the others that I have been too. But it was good to sample some of the items from local shops and spend a little time with Kimberlee and her husband.

I stayed there for about a half an hour and then walked over to the Hartford Club. It is a nice location to have a meet up like we did. They had finger sandwiches and a cash bar and we all received a raffle ticket when we entered. I sat down with a group of people that I did not know but I recognize one of the girls at the table. When I introduce myself she told me I looked familiar to her also. Then I realized she was Alison Overholt who was at the another mother meet up at Fleet Feet in west Hartford earlier in the Spring. She is one of the essayists in the latest Mother Runner book Tales From Another Mother Runner. She also read her essay at the last meet up at Fleet Feet. We talked for a bit about the races in the Connecticut area, since she recently moved here, and I recommended to her to do the Manchester Road race for Thanksgiving.

Ali was there that night to introduce Dimity and interview her for the meet up. I felt like I was at church for runners. Everything Dimity was talking about was exactly what I needed to hear at the time. Ali did a 20 questions interview with her which had some great questions.

The first thing Dimity said was to remember that good is good enough. Before kids when we used to train for our races we would train and follow the training plan to the letter. Now with kids and life we need to give ourselves a break. Sometimes if the training plan calls for 6 miles and we were only able to get in 4 miles, 4 is good enough. We made the effort and we should take pride in what we were able to do.

Another thing she talked about which stood out for me was to enjoy the moment. Dimity said that we need to enjoy the now and not look at the end of the race or how many miles we have left, or how much work is ahead of us; but to actually enjoy the moment we are in. Running shouldn’t bring us stress. Running is our playtime. If we are worrying about how much is ahead of us, or the hills up in front of us, then we are not enjoying the now and having fun with it. I really needed to hear that.

She also talked about some of the basics that I needed to hear all over again. The essentials like taking on fuel at miles 4, 8 and 11. Those will keep us hydrated and sufficiently fueled so that we can finish the race strong. In doing so, we will keep our brain happy and will push away the mental monkeys. I used to be diligent about my fueling and hydration during races; but lately have been running half marathons with little fuel, just enough to get by. When you fuel properly you will have a stronger finish. Especially at the time when you need it. She also reminded us to start of slower so we can finish strong. It’s so easy for me/us to go out fast because of the crowd pushing us along and when we do that we run out of gas too fast and then struggle at the end. You have to make a very conscious effort to be slower the first half. Especially in the beginning when everyone else is surging forward.

Keep a mantra in your head repeat that mantra to yourself so that you are taking your mind away from the bad thoughts and making a conscious effort to speak to yourself positively. She made an excellent point that struck a chord with me. She said don’t ever say something to yourself that you wouldn’t say to a friend. Would you tell your friend she looked fat? Would you tell your friend she’s too slow? So why is it that we can talk to ourselves that way?

I had been struggling with the upcoming Hartford half marathon coming up that week. I was afraid of arriving to the city on time., finding a place to park, and actually running the race. I had been having prerace anxiety with the last few races lately. I don’t know what has been causing it, but hearing what Dimity had to say has been very very helpful to me. Especially the part about enjoying the moment. That is my playtime, that is my time to be with friends who enjoy the same thing that I enjoy.

After the interview was over there was a raffle for some great prizes and then Beth, the Race Director for the Hartford Marathon presented Dimity with the Wonder Woman award.

It was a fun night and afterwards I visited with Dimity’s travelling partner Denise Dollar. I met Denise at the Philadelphia Marathon and also at the Fleet Feet meet up.

I had Dimity sign my bib for the race and took pictures with her and Ali. It was a lot of fun and as always. Thank you Hartford Marathon Foundation for another great event!

Gratitude Journals

While listening to one of my favorite pod casts, Another Mother Runner, Dimity and Sarah were talking with Kristin Armstrong. This was a great episode! I really enjoyed this episode because of something Kristin said she participates in every day. Oprah talked about this on her show once and I always thought it was a “nice” idea but I never participated in it. I would mentally take note of things I am grateful for, but I’m going to take a stab at it and try to maintain a Gratitude journal for a month. This can part another new good habit I can take part in during the month of March (my birthday month) as I approach a new year in my life.

When I was outside taking the kids to wait for the bus the sun was shining. It seemed brighter, like Spring really was making its appearance in our part of the world despite the mountains of snow we are still trapped under. But as we were outside I purposely chose not to put on a coat. I heard the birds singing and thought to myself that I was really grateful to hear those birds again. I even told my husband that I am surprised that we don’t hear those sweet songs at all during the winter months. They really do disappear for a period of time and I greatly miss them.

It occurred to me to write that in my gratitude journal. As I thought about it, I was also grateful that I didn’t have to wear a coat. It wasn’t balmy out, but it sure was a lot better than the 12-15 degrees that we were facing throughout most of January and February. I was also grateful that we were pounding a stick into the snow pile to measure how much snow is going to MELT during the week rather than measuring how much we are getting! That’s a nice sign. I am grateful for puddles. It means the snow is melting and soon the daffodils may hopefully poke their heads out of the snowy ground and the grass will begin to be visible again.

I am also grateful for all of the things I was able to learn today. I learn something new every day and I am grateful for my hunger to absorb new information and to try new things. I love to learn. I hope to keep up this habit, if not on paper, then I hope that I take a quiet moment to myself each day to reflect on what it is I should be grateful for and to look for things that are positive rather than to dwell on things that are not.

I am grateful that I get to see Sarah and Dimity on Thursday night!

I am grateful that I had a new episode to listen to.

I am grateful that when I go to be tonight I have more pages of the Tales from Another Mother Runner book to read.

I am grateful that I can sleep in a little tomorrow and run outside.

Another Mother Runner Meetup is this week!

I am so excited! I have something to look forward to in helping me get through this week! Dimity and Sarah will be at Fleet Feet this Thursday night to celebrate their release of their new book Tales From Another Mother Runner. I already purchased a hard copy of the book in addition to my kindle edition so I can have Dimity and Sarah sign it.

I have met Dimity a few times. I met her last year at the Animal Kingdom Lodge during thePrincess Half Marathon weekend. Then again last November in Philadelphia during the marathon weekend. I visited the AMR booth and Dimity signed my bib and then during the race course she posed with me while cheering on Sarah and her cadet.

I’m looking forward to seeing both Dimity and Sarah together and hearing what they have to share at their event! They also have swag bags and fun stuff!

I am also meeting my fellow runner friends, Kim and her best friend Nicole, Kimberlee, who I met on the flight home from Disneyland 2 years ago and Anne who lives up the road from me, for dinner before the event. That’s guaranteed to be fun!

Dopey Training Update

December 7, 2014

As we are partly into December and a month away from flying into Orlando for the Dopey challenge, I wanted to give an update on my training. I just got back from my Sunday morning run (one of my favorite parts of my week/weekend). It was a VERY rainy day Saturday so I was hoping that rain would push away overnight and Sunday would be clear. My alarm went off at 7:00 and I peeked out the window to see everything wet and cloudy but no more rain drops were dancing on the pool cover. I got up, had my tea, got dressed and hit the road. Six miles were on the schedule today and I had the latest pod cast on my ipod from Another Mother Runner which was about the Philadelphia marathon (which I had just run 2 weeks ago), so I had something to look forward to listening to on my run. All bundled up, I hit the road SLOWLY today. I start off walking some of my hill and then began my running intervals.

I headed up to the vineyard and it was peaceful and beautiful. It was a very wind morning so on the hilltop I was getting blasted. But it was still wonderful. At the vineyard I totaled up to 3 miles so I headed back home for the remaining 3 so I could wake up the family and get ready for breakfast with them. On the return trip home I finished my podcast and then switched to music which gave me an energy boost and I had a productive 2 miles return trip home. As I was running home I was thinking of how thankful I am that this year I didn’t need to go to physical therapy for any issues and that I was remaining strong and healthy for this training and also keeping focused. Despite a little burnout during the Philadelphia marathon, I am on the right path to successfully complete my first Dopey challenge and I am happy about that. I have one more group of training runs in the next two weeks which will contain most of the miles that the Dopey challenge will be; but I am making slight modifications based on what I decided after Phillly. I don’t want to do to the full 26 mile training run and then the full marathon at Dopey, that would be 3 marathons withing a 6 week time period and mentally that would just be too much for me. So my plan is to do 20 miles on my last long training run and then the marathon during the Dopey challenge.

So good reports overall and I am happy with my progress.
